My IVF Pregnancy Journey

Must-Have Baby Products for First-Time Mom

You just found out that you’re pregnant! You cannot wait to share to good news to everybody that you see that day.

Believe me, I was trying to get pregnant for so long that when it finally happened, I was so excited (as well as paranoid that it might not work out, again – due to my history of miscarriages). Anyway, always try to think positive!

When you’re about 6 or 7 months pregnant, you normally want to start a baby registry. That’s when I spent a lot of time researching on which baby products should be on my baby registry. I asked my friends, families, and Mr. Google. I spent a lot of time! So, I know the below list should help any first-time mom out there in choosing baby products for their first bundle of joy 🙂

Here are my top / must have baby products list for a new mother:

1. Boppy Nursing Pillow ($29.99)

When you are planning to breastfeed your baby, this is a must-have item. When you are a new mom, you will struggle with how to get your baby to latch on properly. You will also probably spend a lot of time hunching over without back support. You also need to hold your baby up to your breasts level. This Boppy nursing pillow is the best nursing pillow out there. I cannot live without this pillow even until now. I am still breastfeeding my 7.5 months old baby girl and I bring my Boppy pillow everywhere, including on the airplane. Don’t forget to buy the pillow slipcovers. They are sold separately.

2. Nose Frida Snot Sucker ($15.00)

Doctor invented nasal aspirator that uses parents’ own suction to safely and effectively clear stuffy noses. I don’t know why but my baby girl did not cry when I use this snot sucker on her. Although, you can only use this until your baby is about 5-6 months old. By then, your baby will start blocking it with her/his hands.

3. Diaper Dekor Diaper Pail ($29.95)

Changing diaper is what you will be doing most of the time after your baby is born; every day every 2-3 hours. So, those diapers will pile up quickly and the smell will also fill your entire room! What I like about this diaper pail is that you do not need to change the plastic bag as often because it is continuous and can fit up to 900 used newborn diapers. It has a foot pedal to open the lid, then you just drop your used diaper and no need to touch the pail at all.

4. WubbaNub Pacifier ($14.95)

If you are planning to let your baby suck on pacifier, this is the best invention! A soft plush animal combined with a pacifier. How clever! Your baby will be able to find his/her pacifier during nighttime because of the plush animal. It is designed so that it’s easy for babies to grasp. There are so many different animals you can choose from.

5. Fisher Price Sit-Me-Up Floor Seat with Tray ($49.99)

This is especially useful when you are a full-time mom and will not receive a lot of help from family and your husband is working full time and you are left alone to take care of your baby. You can use this only after your baby is able to hold her/his head up. I use this when I need to do some errands / cooking / taking a bath. I just take it with me and put it on the floor and sit my baby up in it.

6. Baby Buddy 2 Piece Secure-A-Toy Safety Strap ($3.99)

I did not buy this until I realize that I needed this more than anything. When my baby girl has not learned how to grasp / hold her toy / pacifier / teether yet, she will often drop them on the floor. And you do not want to keep on washing them before giving them to your baby again. So, you will need this. You can attach it to stroller, highchair, car seat, almost anything! It is machine washable as well!

7. Summer Infant Pop and Sit Portable Booster ($34.99)

This is the best and cheapest portable seat / booster that I could find. And I am happy and glad I bought this. I use this a lot when I take my baby to eat out at the restaurants. She can sit on her own and entertain her self. It is also a good practice to have her sit with us on the table at meal time. This portable seat/booster is light, can fold in seconds. You can use it at home as well for feeding or playtime. The tray is detachable and can be washed in the dishwasher.

8. Baby Banana Infant Training Toothbrush and Teether ($8.95)

You will not need this until your baby is able to hold / grasp things with her hands. My baby girl could hold this banana teether well on the handles. It is designed so that it is easy for little hands to hold it. It has this thick bristles that can sooth your baby’s teething gums. This product will be useful until your baby is about 1 year old, so I think it is a good investment!

9. Aden + Anais Swaddle Blankets (2 pack) ($32.00 for 2)

People will tell you to get receiving blankets but no one tells you to get swaddling blankets instead. Why? Because it is useful forever. Get a larger swaddling blankets like 47 x 47 inch. The smaller one will not be useful in a blink of an eye. Your baby grows up so fast. Swaddling blankets work like a charm for my baby. She sleeps better when swaddled. This particular swaddle blankets are made of 100% cotton, soft, and breathable. The breathable material helps reduce the risk of overheating and is gentle against baby’s sensitive skin. You can buy the ones with velcro if you want efficiency when swaddling your baby, though you may not use it for other purposes and harder to wash with other clothes since it may stick to other material and you have to use an extra laundry net. I use the plain swaddle blankets for almost anything; burping, swaddling, blankets, car seat cover, …

10. Baby K’tan ORIGINAL Baby Carrier ($49.95)

What I like about this baby carrier is that you do not need to wrap it around your body – too complicated for me. And, it is 100% made of cotton. You can throw it in the washing machine if it’s dirty and your baby will be comfortable in it. Apparently my baby has eczema, so this is the perfect baby carrier for babies who have sensitive skin / eczema issue. Besides the material and very simple to wear (no wrapping), this baby carrier also comes in different sizes. My body is considered petite, so when I bought and tried all of those one sized carrier, they were all too large for me and it felt loose and not safe for my baby.

11. Bumkins Waterproof Sleeved Bib, Gray Chevron (6-24 Months) ($12.95)

You will need this when you start giving your baby solid food. This particular bib is sleeved, so you will cover most of your baby’s clothes and reduce the mess at meal time. Though, I bought both the sleeved and the 3 pack non-sleeved ones as well. They are very useful because you can just wash them afterwards and they are very easy to clean.

12. Munchkin Miracle 360 Trainer Cup – 2 count ($12.99)

My baby did not like bottles so much so I started her on sippy cups around 6 months. Even then, she did not like anything with spouts. So, I tried these spoutless trainer cups and she loves it. This Munchkin’s miracle 360˚ cup does not spill at all. It also supports normal muscle development in kids’ dental health. Kids can enjoy drinking from anywhere around the rim like adults’ regular cups. It consists of three separate parts: the cup, the handle, and the top BPA free rubber; very easy to clean.

13. The First Years Stack Up Cups ($3.99)

Cheap first toy for my daughter. She loved it so much. She started playing with these cups when she was only few months old. Until now, she still plays with it. On the bottom of the cups, there are numbers and shaped holes. Now that she is able to recognize numbers, she starts to say the numbers out loud to me now. Cheap and worth while ….

14. Munchkin Soft-Tip Infant Spoon, 6 Count ($5.29)

My daughter’s first feeding spoons. They come in 6 colors. The spoons are rounded, soft tip and perfect size for infants’ mouth. They are top rack dishwasher safe and BPA/Phthalate free.

15. Best Suction Baby Bowls for Toddler and 6 Months Solid Feeding – 3 Size ($16.99)

These baby bowls are useful when you start solid feeding at 6 months. You can continue to use them after your child becomes a toddler. They come in 3 different sizes, spill proof, and stackable so it saves storage space in your kitchen.
