My IVF Pregnancy Journey

Why IVF Treatment in Seoul, South Korea?

Why did we choose to do the IVF Treatment in Seoul, South Korea? A lot of friends and relatives asked this question to us. We have five different locations to compare for IVF treatment:

  • Surabaya, Indonesia
  • Los Angeles, USA
  • Singapore
  • Penang, Malaysia
  • Seoul, South Korea

Since my husband and I are now currently living in Indonesia, we need to consider the following factors:

  • Distance from Indonesia: How long is the duration of the flight? How much is the plane tickets? how often do we need to go back and forth for consultation or IVF process?
  • Cost of the IVF itself.
  • Quality of the medical technology: How often do they do IVF treatment? What are the success rate? How many patients have they handled so far? Is it a clinic/hospital specialized for IVF?
  • Language: Do they speak English well? Or can we speak their language? If not, is there somehow who can help us there during the whole process?
  • Accommodation: Is there a place nearby the hospital/clinic? If there is, is it within walking distance? How much is the accommodation?
  • Transportation: How easy is it to take the public transportation? How much is it to take a taxi, bus, or subway?

So, based on the above factors, we kind of narrow down the options in the following way:

  • Distance from Indonesia:
    1. Surabaya, Indonesia: around 1 hour and 10 minutes flight.
    2. Singapore: around 1 hour and 50 minutes flight.
    3. Penang, Malaysia: around 2 hours and 25 minutes flight.
    4. Seoul, South Korea: around 7 hours flight.
    5. Los Angeles, USA: around 19 hours flight.

    4. Penang, Malaysia: Probably the third best in South East Asia.

  • Accommodation:
    1. Seoul, South Korea: We have researched on airbnb, there are plenty of apartments available near the clinic.
    2. Surabaya, Indonesia: Lots of places for rent nearby the hospital. Quality may not be as good.
    3. Singapore: Lots of places nearby the hospital but a bit costly.
    4. Penang, Malaysia: There are apartments for rental nearby the hospital for cheap price. Quality / cleanliness cannot be guaranteed.
    5. Los Angeles, USA: Probably need to rent a place nearby but very costly.
  • Transportation:
    1. Seoul, South Korea: Subway, Buses, and Taxis are available.
    2. Singapore: Subway, Buses, and Taxis are available.
    3. Surabaya, Indonesia: Only Taxis are available.
    4. Penang, Malaysia: Only Taxis are available. Buses are slow and unpredictable.
    5. Los Angeles, USA: Need a car to go anywhere.

After few consultations and our Internet researches, we have decided to do the IVF treatment in Seoul, South Korea. Even though the cost is not the cheapest, but we think the quality of the medical technology is a very important factor for us. The ease of accommodation and transportation is also a plus. Also, I think we can learn Korean language easily since we regularly watch Korean variety shows and dramas for the past few years … 🙂
